Embodied Map Tools (EMT) is a urban mapping and choreographic composition method devised by visual artist, researcher, multidisciplinary performer Alessandro Carboni. EMT uses the body as a choreographic tool to map events happening in a urban setting, in their geometrical and temporal extensions.

Using a variety of languages such as visual arts, experimental cartography and performing arts this method allows artists, performers, designers, researchers and anyone with an interest in field-work practices, to transform the experiences of observation and embodiment lived in the urban space into a choreographic score. Experimental cartography is intended here as an artistic practice that helps us to think of maps not as mere two-dimensional and objective reproductions, but as something creative where the body becomes the tool with which we can experiment new ways to represent space. EMT contributes to the research and the artistic practice and introduces new body mapping ideas and techniques for academics and professionals who work in the fields of urban studies, experimental cartography and site-specific dance. EMT is the result of a long, practical and theoretical, individual and collective research between Carboni and numerous performers, academics, artists, researchers, cartographers and curators.

 

EM Tools is :

• an artistic tool that enables artists, educators and researchers to create their own works;

• a research tool that embodies all the theoretical background of research and allows Alessandro and others to investigate the relationships between urban mapping and performance practices in more a systematic way;

• a teaching tool in which Alessandro Carboni and others can delivery the principles of the toolkit through workshops of different formats  for kids  and adults;

Alessandro Carboni is an interdisciplinary artist, performer and researcher whose projects explore the complex relationships between body, maps and the city. His works are mappings representing places that reshape and weave according to different stages, stimulated by specific urban contingencies. His projects are supported by Formati Sensibili, an independent production company that shapes projects involving arts, science, architecture and education. Besides his artistic production and research, Alessandro has created EM Tools for urban mapping and performance art practice, a choreographic system that uses the body as a device to capture/extract urban events and to map what happens in geometrical and temporal extensions of a place.

Embodied Map Tools (EMT), è un metodo di mappatura urbana e composizione coreografica ideato dall’artista visivo, ricercatore, performer multidisciplinare Alessandro Carboni. EMT utilizza il corpo come strumento cartografico per mappare ciò che accade in uno spazio urbano nelle sue estensioni geometriche e temporali.

Utilizzando diversi linguaggi quali arte visiva, cartografia sperimentale, performance art, il metodo permette agli artisti, ai performers, ai designers, ai ricercatori e alle persone interessate alle pratiche di field-work, di trasformare le esperienze di osservazione e incorporazione vissute nello spazio urbano, in uno score coreografico. La cartografia sperimentale, infatti, si intende qui come una pratica artistica che ci aiuta a pensare alla mappa non come una riproduzione bidimensionale e oggettiva, ma come qualcosa di creativo in cui il corpo diventa lo strumento con cui sperimentare nuove forme di rappresentazione dello spazio. EMT contribuisce alla ricerca e pratica artistica e introduce nuove idee e tecniche di mappatura corporale per studiosi e professionisti che lavorano nei campi degli studi urbani, della cartografia sperimentale, della danza site specific. EMT è il risultato di una lunga ricerca pratica e teorica, individuale e collettiva, tra Carboni e numerosi performers, studiosi, artisti, ricercatori, cartografi, curatori.

 

EM Tools è:

• uno strumento artistico che permette ad artisti, educatori e ricercatori di creare i propri lavori;

• uno strumento di ricerca che abbraccia tutto il background teorico che permette Alessandro e chiunque di investigare le relazioni tra mappatura urbana e le pratiche della performance in modo più sistematico;

• uno strumento didattico con cui Alessandro Carboni e chiunque possono trasmettere i principi del toolkit attraverso workshops in vari formatti sia per bambini che per adulti.

 

Alessandro Carboni è un artista interdisciplinare, performer e ricercatore. Le sue ricerche teorico-pratiche esplorano delle relazioni tra corpo, spazio urbano e cartografia, che si traducono in reportage performativi composti da situazioni esplorate e accumulate negli spazi urbani sotto forma di mappe corporali. Ha sviluppato numerosi progetti di ricerca, mostre, performance presso festival, musei e gallerie in tutto il mondo. Negli anni ha sviluppato EM Tools for urban mapping and performance art practice, un metodo di composizione coreografica che utilizza il corpo come uno strumento di mappatura di eventi urbani nella loro estensione geometrica e temporale. Attualmente lavora come artista indipendente ed è direttore artistico della casa di produzione indipendente Formati Sensibili.
